چکیده

In a variety of disciplines such as social sciences, psychology, medicine and economics, the recorded data are considered to be noisy measurements of latent variables connected by some causal structure. This corresponds to a family of graphical models known as the structural equation model with latent variables. While linear non-Gaussian variants have been wellstudied, inference in nonparametric structural equation models is still underdeveloped. We introduce a sparse Gaussian process parameterization that defines a non-linear structure connecting latent variables, unlike common formulations of Gaussian process latent variable models. The sparse parameterization is given a full Bayesian treatment without compromising Markov chain Monte Carlo efficiency. We compare the stability of the sampling procedure and the predictive ability of the model against the current practice.

Parameter Estimation in Spatial Generalized Linear Mixed Models with Skew Gaussian Random Effects using Laplace Approximation

Spatial generalized linear mixed models are used commonly for modelling non-Gaussian discrete spatial responses. We present an algorithm for parameter estimation of the models using Laplace approximation of likelihood function. In these models, the spatial correlation structure of data is carried out by random effects or latent variables. In most spatial analysis, it is assumed that rando...

Bayesian estimation of causal direction in acyclic structural equation models with individual-specific confounder variables and non-Gaussian distributions

Several existing methods have been shown to consistently estimate causal direction assuming linear or some form of nonlinear relationship and no latent confounders. However, the estimation results could be distorted if either assumption is violated. We develop an approach to determining the possible causal direction between two observed variables when latent confounding variables are present. W...

مدل معادلات ساختاری و کاربرد آن در مطالعات روانشناسی: یک مطالعه مروری

Introduction: Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is a very general statistical modeling technique, which is widely used in the behavioral sciences. It can be viewed as a combination of path analysis, regression and factor analysis.  One of the prominent features of this method is the ability to compute direct, indirect and total effects, as well as latent variable modeling. Methods: This sy...

Latent Variable Modelling: A Survey*

Latent variable modelling has gradually become an integral part of mainstream statistics and is currently used for a multitude of applications in different subject areas. Examples of ‘traditional’ latent variable models include latent class models, item–response models, common factor models, structural equation models, mixed or random effects models and covariate measurement error models. Altho...

Estimation of linear, non-gaussian causal models in the presence of confounding latent variables

The estimation of linear causal models (also known as structural equation models) from data is a well-known problem which has received much attention in the past. Most previous work has, however, made an explicit or implicit assumption of gaussianity, limiting the identifiability of the models. We have recently shown (Shimizu et al., 2005; Hoyer et al., 2006) that for non-gaussian distributions...
